1898 $2.50 Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle – CACG PR63 CAM – Top Pop – Mintage 165
Offered here is an exceptional 1898 Liberty Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle, graded PR63 CAM by CAC Grading. This is a rare Proof issue with striking Cameo contrast, representing a true collector-level rarity.
With an original mintage of just 165 pieces, the 1898 Proof Quarter Eagle is an elite, low-production issue that was never intended for circulation. These coins were struck with specially prepared dies and polished planchets, resulting in mirrored fields and frosted devices.
This example is further distinguished as Top Population at CACG, with no finer examples graded at this service. Combined with its Cameo designation, this places the coin among the finest known at CACG and makes it especially desirable for registry-level collectors.
Graded PR63 CAM, this coin displays strong mirrored fields with noticeable contrast between the reflective surfaces and the frosted design elements. The strike is sharp, with crisp detail throughout Liberty’s portrait and the reverse eagle. Light hairlines consistent with the grade are present, but the overall eye appeal remains impressive for a Proof issue of this era.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty wearing a coronet surrounded by thirteen stars, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, arrows, and olive branch. The coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, with an actual gold weight of approximately 0.1209 troy ounces.
Proof Liberty Head Quarter Eagles are among the most desirable coins in pre-1933 U.S. gold, combining low mintages, exceptional craftsmanship, and strong historical appeal. The addition of a Cameo designation and Top Pop status at CACG significantly enhances the desirability of this already scarce issue.
An outstanding opportunity to acquire a Top Pop CACG Proof Cameo gold coin with an extremely limited mintage.
